As the era of massive IoT gathers pace, jurisdictions across the globe are introducing comprehensive regulations covering safety, security and performance which present a baseline for all connected devices to comply with. Certification is a prerequisite for market introduction because without the correct certification, devices will not be allowed to connect to carrier networks. The scope is broad with individual carrier requirements needing to be accommodated alongside legislation, regulation and the industry-specific device needs. An added layer of complexity applies to mission critical devices which have to comply with higher levels of security and robustness.
For IoT device designers and developers, there’s a lot to take in. A wide range of different certification requirements exist across the globe and it’s essential that the various requirements are well understood so device compliance can be achieved. Often, this knowledge is hard to access and falls way outside of the scope of design and developer skills. IoT organizations therefore face the choice of investing in their own certification teams with specialists that understand all the implications or using certification services from providers.
Understand evolving North American certification requirements for IoT devices
Building their own capability will cause time delays and there are only a relatively small number of people with certification skills in the industry so it will be challenging to build a skilled team. It can be far more rapid and simpler to use a certification service because they have the in-depth knowledge plus the relationships with certification authorities to expedite certification effectively. In addition to saving time, certification services can help to ensure errors are avoided and the process of gaining certification is optimized.
It’s important to be prepared for successful certification and to understand that certification requirements are evolving. It’s ideal to consider certification at the ideation, planning or design stages but even if a device has already been manufactured, certification can be streamlined.
These issues were explored in a recent Quectel Masterclass which guides developers through the most appropriate steps for readying a product for market. This Masterclass focuses on the North American market and provides an in-depth explanation of the requirements of FCC and PTCRB regulators plus the major carriers’ certification requirements in the region.
The Masterclass, titled ‘How to meet North American IoT certification requirements more efficiently – Part II’ provides an overview of current certification requirements and details the testing scope for end devices for each type of certification needed to comply with requirements across the region. This Masterclass, presented by Seungryoul Yoon, the Certification Director (North America) at Quectel, shares how to address certification requirements faster, more efficiently and at lower cost. In addition, the webinar explains how Quectel Testing Services can simplify and accelerate the certification testing process, with lower costs and faster timelines.
