Motus 2, ultra-high performance MEMS IMU for Unmanned Systems

Motus inertial sensors can be upgraded with an optional Inertial Navigation System (INS) license & a GNSS receiver to build a flexible GNSS/INS solution for specific requirements

Advanced navigation introduced Motus 2, the second generation of their ultra-high performance, ultra-compact MEMS IMU (inertial measurement unit) for unmanned systems. Motus is a rugged ultra-high accuracy MEMS inertial measurement unit and AHRS. It features some of the highest accuracy MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes currently available combined with magnetometers. Motus is fully calibrated for all sensor errors over a wide temperature range and can be software upgraded to INS functionality. It is available in both OEM and rugged packages.

Motus 2 pushes the performance boundaries of MEMS gyroscope technology to offer performance greater than many FOG systems in a tiny form factor ideal for unmanned systems.

Advanced Navigation’s Director of R&D, Nathan Wilson, said: “We are very excited to unveil our next generation of MEMS sensor technology with greatly improved gyroscope performance, exceeding many Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) systems. We have been able to reduce bias instability from 0.4 °/hr to 0.2 °/hr and initial bias from 10 °/hr to 3 °/hr. Accelerometer performance is also improved, with initial bias decreased by more than half from < 1 mg to < 0.45 mg. We are able to deliver this solution at an ultra-competitive price point with a SWaP-C (Size, Weight and Power, Cost) as low as one-tenth that of equivalent performance FOG systems.”

Motus inertial sensors are put through an extensive calibration process that results in consistently accurate data over a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

The new Motus is available in an OEM version or enclosed in a rugged aluminium housing, waterproof to IP67 standard, making it highly suited to harsh conditions.
